Sound system for clubs, bars and discos

When you enter a good club or disco, the first thing you notice is the sound. Or rather, you notice it before you even step foot in the club :) Deep bass, clear highs, a balanced sound that literally absorbs you - it all depends on a properly designed sound system. If you are a club owner or plan to be one, this article will help you understand what you need to keep your customers coming back.
"To make it play loud"
One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is thinking, “The bigger the speaker, the better.” The truth is that a club or disco’s sound system must be precisely designed with the specifics of the space in mind. It’s not just about performance. It’s also about quality, balance, sound directionality, room acoustics, and, of course, the overall experience of the visitor.
What not to forget when installing a club or disco’s sound system
1/ Professional speakers
The foundation of any proper sound system? Definitely high-quality and powerful speakers. Without them, your business won’t have a proper sound, atmosphere, or a chance to impress a discerning visitor who has come to enjoy your favorite music. Choosing the right speakers for clubs and discos depends on the size and acoustics of the space, the location of the dance floor, the genre of music, your demands on technology, and so on.
Active vs. passive speakers – which one to choose?
- Active speakers have a built-in amplifier, so you can simply plug them in and play. They are ideal for smaller to medium-sized spaces, where quick installation and less cabling are an advantage.
- Passive speakers are more suitable for large clubs and discos, where you want to have the system under complete control. You need to combine them with external amplifiers, processors and crossovers, thanks to which you will achieve higher quality, accuracy and performance. Passive systems are more demanding to set up correctly, but in the hands of a professional they can do incredible things.
What to look for when choosing speakers?
- Power / A simple equation applies here - the larger the space, the more power you need. However, it is not only about power, but also about effective coverage.
- Sound direction / An important factor for even sound coverage without "dead spots". It is solved by proper placement and selection of suitable directional drivers.
- Frequency response / Good speakers can handle both mids and highs cleanly and without distortion, which is key for dance music with lots of detail.
- Compatibility with subwoofers / Choose models that can be easily supplemented with subwoofers so that the entire system plays as one.
Recommended models from the BS ACOUSTIC range:
- Active loudspeakers
- Passive loudspeakers
If you are going to a larger club installation, it is definitely worth considering a line array system, which provides even coverage of large areas without the need for extreme volume at the sound source. In combination with high-quality subwoofers, a line array forms the basis for professional sound systems for dance clubs.
2/ Powerful subwoofers
If speakers give music a face, subwoofers give it heart and power. They are responsible for the deep, physically perceptible bass that vibrates the floor, the walls and – if the system is set up correctly – even your insides (in the best sense of the word).
Without a proper subwoofer, you simply won’t get the right club energy. The bass needs to be strong, yet controlled, so that you literally don’t feel physically sick.
What to look for when choosing a subwoofer?
- Driver size / The most commonly used is a 15", 18" or even 21" driver. The larger the deeper and stronger the bass.
- Power (RMS vs. Peak) / Look for RMS power from about 500W upwards for smaller spaces. For larger clubs at least 1000W.
- Enclosure type / Bass reflex or band-pass? Reflex subs are more versatile, band-pass offer a harder punch.
- Active vs. passive / Active subwoofers (with an amplifier) are easier to connect. Passive ones are more flexible in professional systems.
Recommended models from the BS ACOUSTIC range:
- Active subwoofers
- Passive subwoofers
Don't forget that a quality subwoofer for a disco also needs the right placement. Not too much in the corner, but not in the middle of the dance floor. And ideally, connect several of them for more even coverage.
3/ DJ mixer
If the speakers and subwoofers are the “arms and legs” of the system, the mixer is its brain. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to adjust volumes, inputs, effects, or route between zones. The mixer must be intuitive, durable, with a sufficient number of inputs, and ideally with digital signal processing capabilities.
Types of mixers suitable for clubs:
- Analog mixers / Simpler, often cheaper, ideal where not much digital processing is needed.
- Digital mixers / Compact, but packed with features: effects, scenes, equalizers, compressors. Ideal for more complex operations.
Key features of the mixer:
- Sufficient number of inputs for DJ controllers, microphones, players
- XLR outputs for high-quality connection to the PA system
- Effects unit (echoes, reverbs, limiters)
- USB / Bluetooth input (practical for quick connection)
Recommended models from the BS ACOUSTIC range:
Denon DJ prime Go is a top-notch portable DJ console with a 7" touch screen. It allows dynamic and creative interventions into the playing tracks using 8 multifunctional pads that can be used in Hot Cue mode, as loops or roll / slice scenes. DJs can edit entire tracks during performances, combine different genres, change BPM and layer tracks in the same key.
